The HND Business Studies course aims to develop your ability to understand business issues from a range of perspectives, to analyse management problems and specify workable solutions. The course is ideal for those who have started or are planning a move into a career in private or public sector business. On this course you’ll learn how businesses grow, develop and thrive, and it is designed to prepare you to run businesses big and small.

The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Business is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the business sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. The Higher National qualifications in Business are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the business sector and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in business.

HND Business Studies

The diverse nature of the course will ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge to undertake a variety of business roles, including management, and the business world will be your oyster! This diploma introduces you to the fundamentals of business and builds your entrepreneurial skills. We’ll give you the skills needed to manage your own business, or explore careers in a wide range of industries.

This HND Business Studies diploma is for those who prefer a practical approach to learning, and is ideal if you want to hit the ground running in real business situations. It has a broad syllabus and is useful whether you already have some working experience or are just starting out on your career. There is a very significant focus on developing business and employability skills that will provide successful students with career enhancing opportunities and the opportunity to proceed to a full Honours Degree.

Career opportunities

On completion of the course you will gain an established and nationally recognised qualification that will equip you for employment in a wide range of business settings. It will successfully prepare you for a career in financial services, consultancy, general business management or recruitment, business management, accountancy, consumer research, statistical analysis, banking and public or private financial institution, marketing and retail management.

Entry requirements

Minimum Age: 18 years old;
Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) or relevant work experience;
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language;
An interview with the college is compulsory prior student registration.
Applicants must bring their original certificates when coming for registration;

Assessment

Assessment is based on assignments, typically one assignment per unit. These assignments will vary and include a mix of formal reports, presentations and practical tasks, but there will be no formal exams. You won’t have to write any exams during your HND; instead you will focus on gaining practical, applicable skills through real-world case studies and group and individual assignments. Learners are assessed using a variety of methods, including group work, tutorials, lectures, seminars presentations, role play and case study analyses, written assignments.

Progression

The HND is a nationally and internationally recognised qualification throughout the business world. It provides a basic grounding in the core areas of business and management and leads to an enhanced career as well as promotion prospects. The HND gives automatic subject exemption from many professional qualifications.

Holders of the Higher National Diploma in Business can study for one additional year at various UK universities and gain a business degree (e.g. BA Honours in Business).

Government Funds – Student Finance England

If you are an UK/EU citizen or living in the UK on Indefinite stay, you can receive support from the government via Student Loan Company to cover tuition fees and some living costs while studying, depending on your circumstances. Tuition fee loans, to cover the full cost of your course, are paid directly to the course provider. Maintenance loans can be applied for at the same time, lending you money at the start of each term. You won’t have to pay back the loan until after your course, when you’re earning above a certain level. Students can still apply for grants if they’re eligible for certain benefits, disabled, or need help with childcare costs.
