The HND Fashion and Textiles course is a two year qualification designed to equip you with a wide range of creative and technical skills which will allow you to work as a fashion or textile designer within the industry. Studying fashion in the hub of London will allow you to utilise the wonderful cultural facilities to inspire and develop your work. This course will challenge your preconceptions of the fashion design process and the potential range of career paths available to you within the fashion industry.

Aspiring fashion designers gain a nationally recognised qualification and vital industry skills through this 2 years Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles. Students will explore the fashion industry and its related disciplines and roles, covering technical and design fundamentals and how to generate new trends and ideas.

HND Fashion and Textiles

The course will also place your design skills within a live working context and prepare you for the professional world of work with industry experience and professional practice units, integrated into the programme structure.

The HND Fashion and Textiles course is for students with some previous academic experience or personal interest in art and design who have the ambition to further develop a professional fashion textile focus with in their work. The programme will allow you to experience and develop your knowledge of the fashion textile design process within the context of a professional studio setting.

Students will explore the fashion industry and its related disciplines and roles, covering technical and design fundamentals and how to generate new trends and ideas. The course incorporates practical hands-on assignments to more accurately reflect the fashion industry. Key areas include fashion design, pattern drafting, textiles behaviour and sewing and making skills for fashion, lingerie and sportswear. These are taught alongside business-focussed subjects including garment manufacturing, promotion, marketing and styling. Students will also explore influences such as culture, street style, new technology and lifestyle trends.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged and guided to develop your own practice by combining practical skills, drawing and design development and the awareness of its application within the creative industries. You will learn a broad range of skills which will be applicable to a variety of creative career pathways.

Course Length: 2 years;

Start dates: February / July / October;

Career opportunities

The industry-focused teaching panel give students with valuable imminent into the latest creative and marketable innovations in fashion and textile keeping skills related to employers. Future roles could include Fashion Designer, Textile Designer, Garment Technologist, Fashion and Textile Buyer, Stylist, Visual Merchandiser, Garment Technologist, Pattern Cutter, Studio Manager, Fashion Stylist, Personal Shopper, Image Consultant and more.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old;
  • Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) or relevant work experience;
  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language;
  • An interview with the college is compulsory prior student registration.
  • Applicants must bring their original certificates when coming for registration

Assessment

You are required to complete substantial amount of practical work which must be evidenced through, sketchbooks, annotation of work, and producing an end outcomes based on a theme/tasks. The work completed will form part of your course assessment. It is assessed and graded internally by a combination of: practical work with end outcomes, presentations, exhibitions and written work. The work produced will relate to specific unit assignments.

Progression

You could progress further in your studies into the 3rd year BA Hons Fashion Design or relevant fields.

Funding

Self-Funding

The Tuition Fee of the course will vary depending on the institution you wish to study in, as well as your status in the UK. The course is available for UK/EU and International Students as well. Please contact us to find out the tuition fee for a specific course you’d like to know about.

Government Funds – Student Finance England

If you are an UK/EU citizen or living in the UK on Indefinite stay, you can receive support from the government via Student Loan Company to cover tuition fees and some living costs while studying, depending on your circumstances. Tuition fee loans, to cover the full cost of your course, are paid directly to the course provider. Maintenance loans can be applied for at the same time, lending you money at the start of each term. You won’t have to pay back the loan until after your course, when you’re earning above a certain level.  Students can still apply for grants if they’re eligible for certain benefits, disabled, or need help with childcare costs.
